Piano for Kids

In connection with her commitment to young musicians, in her project "Piano for Kids" Corinna Simon introduces children and young people to little masterpieces from three centuries that were composed for them.

Among them are compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Robert Schumann, Claude Debussy, Bohuslav Martinu, Dmitri Shostakovich, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Ernest Bloch and many others.

So far, two CD albums have been released by Sony Classical (in co-production with Deutschlandfunk Kultur). "Piano for Kids 1" was nominated for the German Music Prize "Opus Klassik" in 2020.

“There are a number of projects that aim to bring classical music closer to children. Most of the time, large-format works are explained as "child-friendly" or pieces are selected that are assumed to appeal to children, e.g. B. Beethoven's "für Elise" or Mozart's "Turkish March".

It's easy to get the impression that classical music is something that children have to "grow into" in order to understand. When it comes to compositions for children, there is often a prejudice that these are educational pieces.

There is a large number of masterful compositions written especially for children that need no explanation and have no educational purpose. Some of them are famous, like Robert Schumann's "Album for the Young" or Claude Debussy's "Children's Corner". But who knows Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's "Children's Pieces op. 72", Dmitri Shostakovich's "Puppet Dances" or Joaquin Turina's "En la zapatería"?

Since music is only alive when it is played, I present these works to the public. In my project "Piano for Kids" I play an international program with piano pieces from three centuries for children in concerts worldwide. Of course, adults are also invited to discover this music for themselves."

In 2022, concerts with this program took place at the Palacio Real Madrid, the Gozo Visual and Performing Arts School Malta, the German School Rio de Janeiro and the Teatro Plinio Marcos Brasilia, among others. Numerous other events are planned internationally.
